This elegant scarf was created for the exhibition Masterpieces of French Faience: Selections from the Sidney R. Knafel Collection (October 10, 2018 to September 22, 2019). The platter that served as the inspiration for this scarf was made in Nevers, France, ca. 1660–70. It is painted in white, yellow, and ochre with birds and bouquets of tulips, roses, daisies, and carnations. The platter’s striking dark blue background became a signature color of the faience produced in this city at the end of the seventeenth century and was known as “Nevers blue.”  The floral decoration is reminiscent of the Iznik tiles made in western Anatolia during the sixteenth century.

100% silk, 70 x 32 in.
