Scarves from UK designers Wallace Sewell spotlighting favorite works from the Frick's permanent collection have long been a bestseller in the Museum Shop.
This new scarf is adapted from the colors in Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of The Honorable Frances Duncombe. The designer's focus was on the dress and the beautiful sunset, with a soft pink shade mixing with various shades to create the moody mauve in the sky.
Gainsborough’s portrait reveals the artist’s admiration for Anthony van Dyck’s portraits of British sitters in the seventeenth century. This is evident not only in the painting’s elegant proportions and the sitter’s graceful pose and Arcadian setting, but also in her blue satin dress, lined with pearls, and the plumed hat she holds in her right hand.
