The design of this scarf by was adapted from the colors in The Rehearsal, painted between 1878 and 1879 by Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917). The painting is one of twenty works by Degas that explore the subject of young ballet dancers in the classroom. In The Rehearsal the doll-faced dancers, each punctuated by a bright color, contrast sharply with the violinist's dark attire and weathered face.
