Floral Water Bottle

From Water Jug to Water Bottle!

The floral motifs on this water bottle are adapted from the Sèvres porcelain Water Jug in The Frick Collection.

Dressing and grooming were important in the life of an eighteenth-century aristocrat, and the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory produced elegant accessories associated with these activities. Jugs and basins, used to wash one’s hands with scent-infused water, were usually displayed on the dressing table. The flowers and fruits on the Water Jug—pink roses, mauve convolvuli, blue ranunculi, yellow anemones, a pink peach, and purple plums—were painted in the style of a Flemish still-life painting.
