Gallerie des modes et costumes français was a pioneering series of fashion-plate publications, issued in Paris between 1778 and 1787. Its complete run included more than 400 exquisite engravings—many of them hand-colored—that depict hairstyles, clothes, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories. The Frick Art Research Library has an impressive collection of 370 original prints, 24 of which are on view at the Frick for the first time in Ruffles & Ribbons: Fashion Plates from the Time of Marie Antoinette. The beautifully illustrated exhibition catalogue is written by Yifu Liu, the Frick's 2024-26 Anne L. Poulet fellow.
