"a compelling publication for many audiences and subject areas"
—Elias Larralde, review, Art Libraries Society of North America, September 2023

Living Histories: Queer Views and Old Masters highlights the work of four New Yorkbased artists, each of whom was commissioned to create a single work that would temporarily replace four major paintings in The Frick Collection that were out on loan. Works by Jenna Gribbon, Doron Langberg, Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Salman Toor replaced paintings by Vermeer, Holbein, and Rembrandt and were shown alongside other works by these celebrated artists. The commissioned works emphasize issues of gender and queer identity typically excluded from narratives of early modern European art. This book is the result of the four New York artists’ responses to the Frick’s permanent collection and the conversations their works inspired.
