Beginning with the establishment of several courses in the 1880s and 1890s, the popularity of golf in the United States surged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) was an enthusiastic golfer who contributed to the founding of several courses over his lifetime. By 1917, he was a member of no less than sixteen clubs throughout the United States and Europe, playing as frequently as he could. According to his daughter, Helen Clay Frick (1888–1984), golf was the “keenest enjoyment” he had during the later years of his life.
The Frick Collection originated with Henry Clay Frick, who bequeathed his Fifth Avenue residence and collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts to the public for their enjoyment, housed in one of New York City's last great Gilded Age homes.
