Between 1914 and 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Frick employed approximately thirty people
to run their household at 1 East 70th Street. An elaborate call bell system, designed
by the architecture firm Carrère and Hastings, was installed in various areas of the
mansion, allowing the family to press a button to summon their household staff.
This was the height of convenience and luxury at the time.

Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) used the system to call his valet and the family’s
butler. His valet was primarily responsible for his personal wardrobe and overall
well-being. Butlers were one of the highest paid members of the household staff and
had a wide range of duties, including serving as the family’s representative to the
outside world.
