Four large canvases are at the heart of the cycle that is known as The Progress of Love, painted by Fragonard for Madame du Barry, Louis XV’s last mistress. In the four stages of love’s progress the couple advances from a flirtatious proposal (The Pursuit) to a secret rendez-vous (The Meeting), marriage (The Lover Crowned) and then Love Letters. Fragonard in later years completed the series, including four personifications of different kinds of love as overdoors: Love Pursuing a Dove, Love the Avenger, Love the Jester, and Love the Sentinel.
