The design of this long, delicate scarf is adapted from the sumptuous gold brocaded dress in Genoese Noblewoman, a portrait by Anthony van Dyck that evokes the scale and lavishness of Genoa’s palaces, which in the seventeenth century surpassed all other aristocratic residences of Europe. It was during intermittent stays in Genoa that Van Dyck emerged as the most important portraitist of his generation.
