This generously sized mug features a painting of hibernal revels from François Boucher’s The Four Seasons series, which he painted in 1755 for Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, King of France. Unlike earlier representations of the seasons, which depict labors performed at various times of the year, these works depict delightful amorous encounters in exuberant colors. Here, Boucher depicts a lady in a fur-trimmed gown reclining in a sleigh propelled by an attendant.
