This generously sized mug features a painting of summertime pleasures from François Boucher’s The Four Seasons series, which he painted in 1755 for Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, King of France. Unlike earlier representations of the seasons, which depict labors performed at various times of the year, these works depict delightful amorous encounters in exuberant colors. Here, nude figures bathe in water gushing from a stone fountain in the guise of a dolphin.
