This generously sized mug features a painting of autumnal courtship from François Boucher’s The Four Seasons series, which he painted in 1755 for Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, King of France. Unlike earlier representations of the seasons, which depict labors performed at various times of the year, these works depict delightful amorous encounters in exuberant colors. Here, a young man offers a bunch of grapes to his fashionable beloved. Her little straw hat is perched precariously on her head.
